Steps to get a Passport for a minor – USA.

Steps to Follow

One question I get asked a lot is how do I get passports for my minor children, and where do I even start? I am going to simplify that for you right here:

Step 1: Get a picture of each child – zoomed in. You will need a 2×2 size picture of each child. I would recommend getting them done at Walmart – 1 hour photo is currently $0.14/each. Compared to getting the specified passport picture at Walgreens, CVS or FedEx where the cost ranges from $16.99 to $24.99.

Step 2: Fill out form DS11 at travel.state.gov. One for each kiddo. Fill it out, print it, but DO NOT SIGN it.

Step 3: Make an appointment online with the Post Office or Library. Both parents and child on the birth certificate HAVE to be present when signing the forms.

Step 4: Have all necessary documents with you at time of the appointment. Birth certificate for minor child, government issued ID’s for parents, check for payment. Current pricing is $100 + $35 acceptance fee.

Step 5: You can track the status of the application online, and right now wait times are 8-11 weeks.

Things to Note

Minor passports (kids under the age of 16) are good for 5 years. I would always renew if you were leaving the country the year they expire – just in case. You will send off the child’s birth certificate along with the application, but you will get it back. Don’t be alarmed if you get it back after the passport comes.

You can download the image below to help you track your progress. I will post the link listed on the checklist directly below. I hope this helps. There is a more in depth video on my YouTube channel explaining this. Anything else you guys have questions on please comment below. XO Joanna
